This week’s photo is one for from our Ontario roadtrip. This is a memorial for William and Martha (Ward) Garbutt. While I haven’t figured out the details of how or when, my 2nd Great Grandmother Flora Massey lived with the Garbutt family for a number of years before she married. She was a witness at the wedding of their 5th child Sarah Garbutt to William Buckburrough. She was enumerated with them in the 1881 Canadian Census as Flora Garbutt. And in 1885 she married Mary (Garbutt) Packer’s brother-in-law, Cornelius.
There is a lovely photo postcard that many of my cousins have posted to their Ancestry.com trees of “Grandma Garbutt” at the age of 94, addressed to “Curly and Flo”—my Cornelius and Flora.
The monument is located in section F, Row C, number 4 at Hillview Cemetery on 5th Street, on the southeast side of Woodstock, Ontario. The other two sides have inscriptions for John Garbutt, their son, and their son-in-law Robert Porter.

So my Uncle Fred Glennwood Ward, by marriage to Helen Anna Taylor, my mother’s sister is a son of Ralph Linwwood Ward and Edith Isabel Moore. Ralph was born in Gladsotn, Ontario, Canada to Thomas Jefferson Ward (1858-1919) and Mary Rolph (1858-1895). Mary and Thomas Jefferson were born born in North Dorchester, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Thomas Jefferson Ward was the son of Peter Ward ( born in Augensburg, New York- died 1895 in Gladstone, North Dorchester) and Frances Foster Fester(c1832-?). Peter was the son of James Ward I think UEL United Empire Loyalist. My Aunt Helen hired a genealogist up in Canada who did most of this work. My cousin might still have the papers with his name. Back in the day I was given this information I didn’t realize the source was important.
Also I have a friend whose ancestor was born James Ward in Tiverton, Devon, England 23 November 1829 in Tiverton, Devon, England to James Ward (1799-1846) and Jane Goodrich (1793-1869). The father was born in Loughborough, Leicester, England and died in Tiverton, Devonshire, England. The son died in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey in 1899. My friend was a very thorough genealogist. I have her sources if this is a possible connection.
I also have an Elizabeth Ward who married a John Gray. John was born 1602 in Tawpey, county Essex, England. he died 4 Feb 1645/6 in Stapleford Tawne, Essex, England. I think this comes from a NEHGR article. I know where the file is. This program sometimes has my sources where the notes should be and vice versa. The son of John and Elizabeth (Ward) Gray is in Plymouth, Massachusetts for a 1665 marriage and died in Tiverton, Rhode Island. This is looking like some Tivertons residents from England put the name of their town on this place in Rhode Island. These were ancestors of my cousin Fred LeBaron who is a librarian at Loyola Law School in Chicago. Also my sister-in-law Mikki nee Albee, legal secretary in GR. And Fred’s brother’s ex-wife. The son of Elizabeth Ward and John Gray: Edward Gray is in the Great Migration Begins by Robert Charles Anderson. I think. this program numbers the footnotes as I add them, not as they go chronologically.
Last week I unlinked a Dorcas Ward born 1755 in Nine Partner, Dutchess County, New York, daughter of Ebenezer Ward and Anna Peak. Ebenezer was a son of William Ward and Rachel Humphrey. William and Rachel were from Marlboro, Massachusetts Bay Colony and Union City, Connecticut.
