… Just not all the one’s I expected to.

On Dad’s side, I found Great Aunt Rachel pretty much where I expected her to be, She was just outside of Warren in Bradley County Arkansas, teaching school. And better yet, it’s the first time Uncle Fred is officially listed as doing barbering work. I’d kind of hoped that my grandmother and aunts would be listed with her, but no such luck. And on further research I’ve only found the eldest of those aunts with another family member.

1950 US census, Bradley County, AR, Bradley Quarters, ED. 6-14 Sheet 43, line 3, Fred Elliott family; US National Archives.

And for Mom’s family I found the residents of 223 Maple St. My step-great grandfather, great grandmother, great uncles and great aunt. Grandpa Bill was in the service at this point. He’ll be much harder to find without complete indexing.

1950 US census, Kent County, MI, Rockford, ED. 41-77 Sheet 73, line 16, Harold Bailey family; US National Archives.

And I found my Grandma Ethel living with her mother and siblings in Grand Rapids. That’s the best example of my factory worker family that I’ve ever seen.

1950 US census, Kent County, MI, Grand Rapids, ED.87-159 Sheet 77, line 16, Cora H. Shea family; US National Archives.

Have you been searching the 1950 Census?

Here’sBaileyWmKing  a timely feature for the Baileys!

Today is the 189th Anniversary of the birth of William King Bailey, my Step 3rd Great Grandfather. He was the seventh child of Smith Bailey and Eunice King born 14 January 1825 in Oswego County, New York. The Bailey’s relocated to Cannon Township, Kent County, Michigan sometime in the 1840s having settled by 1846 when the his parents hosted the meeting organizing the First Congregational Church which still exists today as the Bostwick Lake Congregational Church.

In 1852 William married Susan Howard, the daughter of William and Martha Bier Howard. Susan was born March 27, 1830 in England. The couple settled and began their family in Section 24 of Cannon Township on a tract in the west half of the section bordered by what are now Kreuter to the North and 6 Mile to the south. In the 1863 and 1876 plat maps the homestead is shown on Kreuter and nearly opposite the Smith Bailey homestead.

William and Susan had at least nine children. William Howard born in 1853, who married Estella Barringer, the daughter of David and Mary Barringer. Harmon J. was born in 1855 and later married Cordelia Holmes. Martha was born in 1857 and married Frank Benton Henry. Emma Charlotte was born in 1859 and married twice—first to Arista Thompson and then to CharlesUnderhill. George was born in 1865 and married Lizzie Groner. Nettie or Nellie was born in 1867 and later married William Hoag. Three children died young: James H. was born in 1861 and died before he turned three, John H. was born in 1863 and died before his first birthday, and Edward D. born in 1871 lived only 4 months.

Susan died at the age of 46 in April of 1876. William married Mrs. Adaline Parks Beach, widow of Richard Beach, 03 Oct 1876. William died 29 July 1888 after a long illness. William and Susan are buried in Old Bostwick Lake Cemetery, Cannon Township, Kent County, Michigan.

Grandpa Harold Bailey, 1982

Just a quick remembrance…

Grandpa Bailey (my Step Great-Grandfather, Harold Bailey) would have turned 107 this week.

The photo is from my father’s collection taken at one of the Bailey/Johnson Christmas gatherings—probably in 1982.

Happy Hunting!

Post Deer Hunt

I am a total city kid and hunting is a foreign concept to me, but we’ve definitely had (and have) hunters in the family. So in a slight nod to deer season—but more because of the looks on the kids’ faces—here’s a home from deer camp style picture. I believe this shot includes my 1st cousins once removed (of the Johnson and Bailey persuasions)—Brinda, Tom, Robin and… Craig? Please feel free to correct me, but age-wise that makes the most sense. It was taken at my Great Uncle’s home in Rockford in the 1960s and the photo came from the collection of my grandmother.

Happy hunting,

Jess

Old Bostwick Lake Congregational Church, Cannon Twp, MIIt’s that time of year again… Sunday is the Michigan Antiquarian Book and Paper Show (9:30-5 pm) which not only satisfies my interest in collecting books but is also my primary source for postcards to illustrate and round out my genealogy. I tend to collect regular and real photo postcards of street scenes and buildings that were important to my family. So Rockford street scenes dominate my collection. But I also have representative works from Grand Rapids, Howell (the Sanatorium), Leelanau/Grand Traverse, and Ypsilanti as well. And, every once in a while, I even stumble across a postcard actually sent by a distant relative or a friend of the family.

This is a relatively common postcard of Old Bostwick Lake Congregational Church in Cannon Township, Kent County, Michigan which included among its charter members: my Grandpa Bailey’s Great Grandparents, Smith and Eunice Bailey, and two of their married daughters—Eunice Pitcher and Chloe Scott. Many of the Bailey’s and their allied families were buried in the attached cemetery known as Old Bostwick or Marshall Cemetery. The congregation was organized on 06 June 1846 and still exists today in its current incarnation on Belding Rd in Rockford.

Happy hunting.

Pauline & Harold Bailey

It’s been 22 years since my Step-Great-Grandmother Pauline Bailey died. I didn’t spend a lot of time with her but I associate her with the extended family Christmas’s and baby showers she hosted—particularly those held at the Community Room of the Towers in downtown Rockford, Michigan—though I know she was also very involved in the American Legion Auxiliary, Merrit Lamb Post #102 as well.

She was born Pauline Boukamp and had children from a previous marriage (or marriages?) before she married my Grandpa Bailey within a year of my biological Great Grandmother’s death. She was a very strong personality (like most of the women in the family). And, like Grandpa Bailey, she wasn’t related to me by blood but she was the Great-Grandmother I remember best.

For some reason I think of her whenever I see pastel mints.

Happy hunting.

The Plot of Harvey K and Rachel Deer Bailey

This is the plot of the family of Harvey K. Bailey in Rockford Cemetery, in Rockford, MI. The stone in the foreground is that of his wife Rachel C. Deer. Today is the 101st anniversary of her death in Algoma Township, MI. She was born in May of 1830 to George and Sara (Labere) Deer and she is the sister of my 5th Great Aunt, Sarah (Deer) Helsel. She married Harvey in Dec of 1864 in Kent County, MI. The couple had at least two children: Austen and Ella May Bailey. I detailed the Deer family back in May.

Happy hunting,

Jessica

This is the final resting site of my Great Grandmother, Crystal May Porter and my Step-Great-Grandfather Harold Bailey at Blythefield Memory Gardens in Kent County, MI. Grandma Crystal died 44 years ago today, at the age of 55. She was the third child of Charles and Lula (Holden) Porter. She married my Great Grandfather Robert Eugene Johnson on April 13, 1927 and they had four children including my Grandfather, William Eugene Johnson. Crystal and Robert divorced and in 1934 Grandma Crystal married Grandpa Bailey with whom she had one more son.

Happy hunting!
